WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Saturday, Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry said that he will be resigning his congressional seat after he was convicted for lying to FBI investigators concerning illegal contributions.

After a Los Angeles Federal Court trial, Fortenberry was found guilty of conspiring to conceal and falsify material facts. He also faces two charges of lying to federal investigators.

Fortenberry made a statement saying that his current circumstances were making it difficult for him to resign.

Prosecutors accused Fortenberry, during two 2019 interviews with investigators about the $30,000 in campaign donations he received from Gilbert Chagoury in 2016, of lying to them.

Federal law forbids foreigners from making donations to federal elections campaigns.

Fortenberry was not trying to deceive FBI agents, but his lawyers claimed he was caught by surprise when they asked for an interview.

Since 2005, Fortenberry (61), has been a member of Congress.

Each of the three felonies carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment. U.S. District Judge Stanley Blumenfeld will hold a sentencing hearing in Los Angeles on June 28.
