REUTERS/Hannah McKay/Illustration/File Photo(Reuters) – Uber Technologies, (NYSE:) Inc declared Saturday that it was granted permission to operate in London as a 30 month license. It ends a decade-long struggle with London’s transportation regulator for safety.
A spokesperson for Transport for London (TfL), said that Uber was granted a London private-hire vehicle operator’s licence for a two-and-a half year period.
Uber’s London-based license to transport paying passengers was revoked for the second consecutive year in 2019. Uber received an 18 month London license a year later after legal proceedings to restore operations. This was the first time that Uber lost its licence in America.
Uber claimed previously that safety fears have been alleviated by improving insurance verification systems and rolling-out real-time identification.
Last year, the firm reached a partnership with Britain’s GMB union to allow it to represent as many as 70,000 drivers.
TfL considers Uber to be fit and proper and granted Uber license, according to spokesperson.
Uber UK indicated that they will remain committed to offering drivers the best benefits and protections possible and also to becoming a fully-electric platform by 2025.
