LONDON — UberLondon regulators have granted the company a license for a period of 30 months to operate in London. This ends a long-running battle over whether or not the ride-hailing app is “fit and proper”.

Transport for London spokeswoman said Saturday that Uber had been given a London private vehicle operator’s licence for a two-and-a-half year period.

The move ends a years-long spat with the agency, which twice revoked Uber’s London license — once in 2017And a second time in 2019. The company was not able to protect passengers, which raised concerns among authorities. Uber was eventually acquired. won an 18-month London permitIn court

Uber’s charm has been maintained over time. It added safety features and made a deal for the GMB in Britain to recognize its labor union.

After a ruling by the UK’s highest court, which ruled that a number of U.K. drivers should not be considered independent contractors but workers, the company classified all of them as workers and granted them employment protections such as minimum wages, holidays pay, pensions, etc.

Jamie Heywood from Uber, the regional general manager of Northern and Eastern Europe said that TfL held our industry to the highest safety and regulatory standards. He also expressed satisfaction with having met these high standards.

The decision removes a key source of uncertainty for Uber in the U.K. — London is its largest European market — and comes as the company is dealing with rising inflation amid the twin challenges of a labor shortage and surging energy prices. Uber raised its London fares 10% in November.
