SAO JORGE in Portugal (Reuters – A couple who retired from their house had their photograph taken before they left Sao Jorge island, Portugal’s Azores, where disaster is imminent after a series small earthquakes.

Fatima Soares (in her 70s) and Antonio Soares (in their 80s), decided to evacuate their house on Saturday. This was a week ago that thousands of earthquakes began to shake the volcanic island in mid-Atlantic.

According to Seismologists, the over 12,700 earthquakes that have occurred with a magnitude of up 3.3 could set off a strong earthquake or volcanic eruption.

Fatima stated that she asked for a photo of the taxi driver as I didn’t know how my home would look when I return.

She said, “Tears began to fall right away.”

While the couple were present on the island during the 1964 earthquake, they are now staying at a smaller hotel. They hope to soon return to their island of 8,400 inhabitants.

Antonio stated, “Leaving your home at this stage is difficult.”

Many other Sao Jorge residents fled the island early Saturday as well. According to government records, around 1,250 individuals left the island in March 23 and 24, respectively.

CIVISA, the seismovolcanic surveillance center in the area raised the volcanic alert to Level 4 Tuesday. It means there’s a real possibility that the volcano might erupt for only the second time since 1808.

Joao Fontiela told Lusa that although Annaly Sao Jorge had few earthquakes, now there are thousands of them. He is in the islands setting up seismic monitoring stations.

According to him, the situation may drag on for several months.

CIVISA claimed there wasn’t any evidence of imminent volcanic eruptions, however it said that such an event cannot be dismissed. According to CIVISA, the frequency of earthquakes has not fallen below normal.

Ports on the island said that they had prepared for any natural disaster and are working with authorities to ensure safety of livestock.

Residents of care homes and patients in Velas hospital, which is where most of the seismic activity was recorded, were already transferred to the opposite side of the island.
