BEIJING (Reuters). -Recovery crews found the second blackbox – the flight recorder – in the debris of a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 plane that collided with a mountainside, according to state media.

The flight MU5735 had 132 people aboard. On Monday, it was traveling from Kunming, in southwest China, to Guangzhou, on the coast. However, it crashed from its cruising altitude just as it should have begun its landing descent.

It was unlikely that any survivors would be found. On Saturday, authorities announced in a late-night news conference that all the passengers, as well as nine crew members were confirmed dead.

It was the worst air accident in China since 1994 when a China Northwest Airlines flight flying from Xian, Guangzhou, crashed killing 160 passengers.

It is not known what caused the China Eastern crash.

On Wednesday, the other black box, which is the cockpit voice recorder was discovered and sent to Beijing by experts for further examination.

According to state media, the second black box was found on the site’s slope around 9:20 AM (0120 GMT), in wet conditions following recent rains.

State media reported that the device found below the slope’s surface at 1.5m (5ft) will be taken to Beijing to undergo inspections on Sunday.

China leads the crash investigation. Because the Boeing 737-880 aircraft was built in USA, they have been invited to join.

According to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, (NTSB), it is working with Chinese and American authorities in order to solve visa and COVID issues.
