(Reuters) – On Sunday, a senior Ukrainian official said Russia had committed “irresponsible acts” around Chernobyl’s occupied power station. This could have the potential to send radioactive material across large parts of Europe. He urged the United Nations for a task force to evaluate the risk.

Iryna Vreshchuk was Deputy Prime Minster and stated that Russian forces “militarise” the zone surrounding the station. It is the location of the 1986 worst civil nuclear accident.

She claimed that Russian forces were carrying large quantities of obsolete and poorly maintained weapons. This created a danger of damaging the containment vessel built around the wrecked fourth reactor.

Russian forces also prevented firefighters from controlling large fires within the area.

Vereshchuk declared on Telegram, “In the context nuclear safety the irresponsible und unprofessional actions Russian servicemen represent a very grave threat not only Ukraine but to hundreds and millions of Europeans.”

“We demand therefore that the U.N. Security Council immediately take measures to demilitarize Chernobyl’s exclusion area as well as send a special force to eradicate the risk of a repeat of the Chernobyl accident due to the Russian occupying troops,” she stated.

Vereshchuk stated that damage to the vessel would lead to “undoubtedly the release into the atmosphere of an extensive amount of radioactive dirt and contamination, not just in Ukraine, but in other European countries.”

Russia continued to transport arms in the vicinity of the station, she claimed.

Reuters was unable to verify Vereshchuk’s ground claims immediately. Russia denies that Russian forces put in danger nuclear facilities within Ukraine.

Chernobyl’s fourth reactor was hit by a fire in 1986, causing radiation to travel as far as Britain and Spain. The radiation that was released from the accident’s aftermath has caused thousands of deaths.

All of its reactors are now out of use.

In the initial days of the Russian invasion, Russian forces took control over Chernobyl Station. Staff living there were prevented from leaving the station or they were spelled out by others.

Slavutych’s mayor, who was the first town to be built after the 1986 disaster, stated that Russian forces have taken control of the city. In clashes, three people died.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated in a statement it was monitoring the situation closely and expressed concern over the staff’s inability to rotate out of the station.
