LONDON (Reuters), Prince William stated that he will continue to serve people after a Caribbean trip that was marred by protests about the British empire, and criticism that it reflected a return back to colonial times.

William issued the statement following an eight day tour to Belize and Jamaica with Kate. This included protests, calls for British reparations and an apology for slavery.

International media and British officials have also criticized some photos from the tour. These included the Royals breaking bread with Jamaican children and standing in open-topped vehicles to watch a military parade. This image was based on Queen Elizabeth’s 1950s photo.

William shared that he was aware of the fact that William’s tour had brought out new questions regarding the future and past. “The future in Belize, Jamaica, Bahamas and other countries is left up to people.”

William, the second-in-line to the British throne had traveled to the Caribbean along with Kate in celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 70th year as monarch. The move came at a time when some countries were considering cutting ties with Britain’s monarchy. It also happened after Barbados lost the 95-year old queen head of state and was made a republic.

Elizabeth continues to be the queen in 15 countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Canada.

William, whose title is Duke de Cambridge, stated that his wife and he wanted to be a servant.

It’s about helping people, not telling them what to do. This is all about helping them think and support each other using the platform that we have.

He also said that he didn’t think about who would be the leader of the Commonwealth of Nations. This group of 54 countries is almost all ex-colonies of the United Kingdom and is focused on the promotion of democracy, development, and peace.

The head of Commonwealth is the Queen. While it is not an inherited role, Prince Charles will take over the title.
