The NFL added additional requirements to the hiring process for offensive assistant coaches and all women. This is in order to ensure that diverse applicants have more chances.

Monday’s announcements at the owners meeting included adjustments to Rooney Rule, which was adopted in 2003. It has been amended often to increase opportunities for women and people of color for almost all team and league jobs.

All 32 clubs will have to hire a coach as offensive assistant starting this season. This person will be given a contract for one year and must work closely with the offensive team and head coach to get experience.

Most head coaches in recent years have come from offensive backgrounds. Art Rooney II, Steelers owner, reiterated Monday that there is not enough talent for this side of the ball.

“We recognize we have seen progress on some fronts,” said Rooney, chairman of the league’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, “but we still have a way to go on other fronts.”

League funding will provide up to two years of salary support for coaches.

In general, the Rooney Rule requires women to be included in every aspect of football. This is done in an effort to reduce under-representation. According to the league, this will allow for the “further identification and development” of female candidates as well as the opportunity to give them more opportunities to apply for vacant positions.

Dasha Smith was the NFL’s chief administrator and one of its highest-ranking females.

Smith said virtual interviews would not be allowed for general managers and head coaches, as well as specific requirements for applicants to be offensive assistants. These requirements would require at least three years’ experience in college and pro sports.

The NFL currently has five head coaches of minorities. There are seven Black general mangers.
