KABUL (Reuters – Afghanistan’s Taliban instructed government workers to grow a beard or adhere to a dress code. This is the latest in a series of restrictions imposed on the administration by hardline Islamists.

Sources claim that Monday’s patrolling of government offices by representatives of the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice was done to ensure compliance with the new rules.

The instructions were to employees to not shave their heads and wear loose, long-sleeved clothing with a hat and/or turban. According to two sources, they were told that they should pray at the appropriate times.

According to sources, workers would be told that they wouldn’t be allowed into offices from now and would be terminated if they didn’t conform with dress codes.

The public morality ministry spokesperson did not respond when we asked for his opinion.

Last week, Taliban ban women from flying alone and closed girls’ schools.

It ordered that parks be separated by sex on Sunday. Women were allowed in three days per week and men could enter the remaining four, which means married couples or families can’t visit the same park.

For forcing its strict interpretation of Islamic law on all Afghans, the Taliban government has been criticized by Western governments and at home.

Taliban claim they will protect everyone’s rights according to Islamic law and Afghan customs. They also say that their rule of 1996-2001, which barred women leaving the home without permission from a male relative, and made it difficult for men to grow beards in public places, has been overthrown.

International protests were triggered by Wednesday’s decision not to allow girls to attend schools.

Taliban need the support of Western nations to lift restrictions that have crippled Afghanistan’s economy.
