MADRID (Reuters), – Spain’s steel giant ArcelorMittal said Tuesday that three Spanish steel mills had been closed and two more partially shut down after a strike by truckers for over two weeks.

According to a spokesperson, the strike forced the company’s Bergara and Lesaka plants in Basque Country to cease production on March 16th and 26th respectively.

He added that parts of the Asturias mills at Gijon and Aviles were shut down due to lack of supply.

On Tuesday, the other plants near Valencia in Zaragoza, Bilbao or Sagunto were still operating but had reported an absence of raw materials from idle plants.

This strike will be another setback to an energy-intensive sector that has already been hit hard by rising electricity prices and gas prices after Russia invaded Ukraine.

ArcelorMittal already stopped production during peak demand hours at Spain’s electric-powered steel plants to reduce costs. This was to ensure that customers don’t pay too much.

Despite some concessions made by the government to truckers last Wednesday, there was still a strike in many areas of the country on Tuesday.
