This group has 730 shops worldwide and is the number one French distributor of sporting equipment.PARIS (Reuters), Decathlon Sportswear, a French retailer of sportswear, said Tuesday it had suspended its Russian activities due to deteriorating supplies.
France’s Mulliez family owns the retailer. They said they will support their 2,500 Russian workers, who some have worked for the company since 2006.
Decathlon observes all international sanctions and has taken note of the fact that Russia is not supplying it with sufficient supplies to allow for its continued activity. Decathlon is forced to cease operation of its stores,” stated the statement.
After the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been putting pressure on Mulliez’s family. They also have high-profile Russian chains like Leroy Merlin, a DIY store, and Auchan, a food retailer in Russia.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the Ukrainian president, has criticised Auchan for its continued operation in Russia. Auchan has 30,000 employees, 231 stores, and ecommerce.
However, Auchan’s CEO told French newspaper Journal du Dimanche that Auchan plans to keep its Russian presence because he fears the company could lose assets and expose local managers to possible legal trouble if it leaves Russia.
