WASHINGTON, (Reuters) –The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission highlighted crypto-assets and information security in the private sector, as well as governance and social issues, among its 2022 examination priorities for market participants like broker-dealers and investors advisers.

In a statement, the SEC stated that its examinations division is responsible for monitoring investor risks and protecting investors. It will review proxy votes to determine if they are in line with ESG-related disclosures or mandates.

According to the agency’s outlook, areas have become priorities since Democrats took over as U.S. regulators in 2021. They include crypto, climate, and broker-dealers’ processes to deal with phishing.

According to the SEC, examiners from the SEC will be focusing on crypto asset custody and will evaluate any recommendations or trading.

Private funds were also included in the outlook of 2022 exams by the agency. Plans include reviewing investment advisers portfolio strategies and risk management as well disclosures to identify conflicts of interests.
