(Reuters) – Wednesday’s update by the World Health Organization for COVID-19 outlines three potential scenarios of how this pandemic might evolve in 2019.

Based on our current knowledge, it is most probable that COVID-19 will continue to develop, and the severity of the disease it causes decreases as the immunity to infection increases.” Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated during a briefing.

The WHO chief cautioned however that there may be periodic spikes and even deaths as immune systems weaken, so it may be necessary to periodically boost vulnerable populations.

Tedros discussed the possibility of two additional scenarios. Tedros indicated that there will either be less severe versions and therefore no need for boosters, new vaccine formulations, or an even more dangerous variant. Protection from infection and prior vaccination will decrease rapidly.

The updated Strategic Preparedness, Readiness and Response Plan https://www.who.int/publications/m/item/strategic-preparedness-readiness-and-response-plan-to-end-the-global-covid-19-emergency-in-2022 sets out the strategic adjustments that every country needs to make to address the drivers of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, lessen the impact of COVID, and end the global emergency.

Tedros stated that this is the third Strategic Preparedness, Readiness and Response Plan by WHO and it will probably be its last.

At the beginning of the pandemic, in February 2020 the first report was made.
