March 18, 2022. REUTERS/Mike Segar/(Reuters: Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:) has begun looking at new suppliers to make its iPhone memory chips. Bloomberg News reports that a Japanese key partner suffered an interruption in production.
Japan-based Kioxia Holdings Corp — a key supplier of flash memory chips to Apple — had reported a contamination last month at two of its manufacturing facilities, which the company said will result in reduced production.
According to the report, Apple is currently testing NAND flash memory chip samples from Chinese semiconductor firm Yangtze Memory Technologies Co.
Yangtze refused to comment, and Apple didn’t immediately reply to Reuters requests to comment.
Foxconn was forced to close its Shenzhen business earlier in the month by another Apple supplier, due to increased COVID-19 case numbers.
The persistent shortage of chips in electronics and automotive industries has caused production to be disrupted. Some firms have had to reduce their production.
