The International Atomic Energy Agency reported Thursday that the control of the Chornobyl nuclear reactor was transferred to Ukraine by the Russian military forces who took it over last month. This was citing Ukrainian information.

According to Kyiv, multiple convoys of Russian soldiers in the region have moved toward Kremlin-allied Belarus at Ukraine’s northern frontier.

In a press statement, IAEA stated that the Russian military forces had “in writing”, given control over the Chornobyl facility to Ukrainian personnel since February 24th.

According to the agency, it was unable “to confirm reports that Russian forces were exposed while in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone” and received high radiation doses.

According to the IAEA, the Russian forces moved in two convoys towards Belarus while another convoy went from Slavutych (where many nuclear staff members live) toward Belarus.

The IAEA stated, “In addition to that, Ukraine reported there were still some Russian forces at the Chornobyl NPP website but assumed that those forces are preparing for departure.”
