Tesla has cancelled plans to resume production at its Shanghai factory on Friday and Saturday, an internal notice seen by Reuters showed, further delaying reopening of the manufacturing hub for its Model 3 and Model Y cars.
Shanghai Factory, which is situated in Pudong, east of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, has been closed for production since Monday. This was after the city initiated a 2-stage lockdown to counter a spike in COVID-19 case.
According to the U.S. automaker, production would resume on April 1. The lockdown in districts east of the river will be lifted by the morning of April 1, and it is expected that the blockade will lift within the hour. Reuters has received a notice stating that production plans have been canceled for April 1, and April 2.
According to two people who were familiar with the situation, Tesla has not received permits from Shanghai for the delivery of its electric vehicles outside Pudong and to the western areas of Shanghai.
Shanghai plans to secure areas west and central of the river beginning Friday morning.
Another source suggested that the company might have decided to prolong the suspension due to a shortage in workers. Meanwhile, lockdowns are continuing at some housing compounds.
Tesla has not yet responded to my request to comment about plans to defer resumption in production until after April 2.
It stated to Reuters on Thursday earlier that China had strictly implemented its epidemic prevention and controls requirements. The government would then adjust their work based upon COVID-19’s prevention policies.
