Zelenskiy is the first foreign head to address a plenary session by the 150-member Dutch lower chamber of representatives.

About 20% of Dutch imports from Russia. Russia has been an important trade partner for the Netherlands over recent years.

Together with Germany and other EU members, the Dutch are actively looking for new energy sources. But, they are finding it difficult to find quick solutions, as global supply is limited.

Zelenskiy requested that the Dutch “adopt” a Ukrainian city to help with post-war reconstruction.

The Netherlands provided military equipment to the Ukrainian military forces, including Patriot air defence systems as well as anti-tank missiles and Patriot air defense system. The Netherlands also supports NATO’s increasing presence at its eastern flank.

Due to complicated tax structures, which make it hard to trace the ultimate owners of property and corporate holdings, the Dutch have not been able to freeze or seize Russian assets worth tens to billions of dollars (or euros) registered in the Netherlands.

On March 22, the Finance Ministry wrote to parliament confirming that Russian assets were worth 392 Million Euros (or $4431.24million). The letter also stated that EU sanctions had placed restrictions on Russian transactions and assets since February 24.

Lilianne Ploumen, Opposition Labour Party Leader, urged Mark Rutte’s government to immediately implement EU sanctions on Ukraine and target these assets quickly because it is “no longer justifiable” to do so to Ukraine.

Zelenskiy made a reference the Netherlands war crimes courts. He called for justice.

“Those who gave orders to bombard and shell Ukraine must be brought into court. People know it in The Hague City of Tribunals,” he stated.
