SINGAPORE (Reuters), Beijing’s Chinese capital will largely be free from coal by 2035. The city’s total energy usage is predicted to hit 90 million tonnes.

The Chinese capital will be the nation’s second largest city with 22 million inhabitants by 2025.

According to the government, coal will be supplying 0.9% (or at 1 million tonnes) of the city’s energy mix in 2025. That is down from 1.5% for 2020 before the fossil fuel is completely phased out by 2035.

Beijing is China’s largest gasified city and accounts for approximately 6 percent of China’s national natural gas consumption. By 2025 Beijing will have consumed 20 billion cubic metres of fuel, an increase of 6% over 2020.

Also, plans have been made for a substantial increase in emergency gas storage. The goal is to reach 1.4 bcm by 2025. That’s an increase of under 200 millions cubic metres from 2020.

The country’s refine fuel consumption will rise to 17 million tonnes over five years, from 13.64 millions tonnes in 2020.

Potentially, renewable power generation capacity could double to 4.35 gigawatts or 28% by 2025.
