Russia’s Kremlin refuted claims by the U.S. claiming that Vladimir Putin believed he had been “misled by his military commanders” over Moscow’s invasion in Ukraine.

Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson told journalists at a Thursday briefing that “to our regret” and “even concern”, neither the Pentagon nor the Department of State have any authentic information on what was happening in the Kremlin.

Peskov stated, “They don’t understand what is going on in the Kremlin. They don’t understand Russian President Vladimir Putin. They don’t understand the decision-making mechanism and the style of work.” according to state news agency TASS.

This is more than regrettable. We are concerned because this utter misunderstanding can result in incorrect decisions or careless actions that could have extremely negative consequences.

After the comments, a declassified U.S. intelligence assessment released Wednesday suggested that Putin had not been given the whole truth about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

U.S. Secretary Antony Blinken, and White House Communications director Kate Bedingfield made comments Wednesday that Putin felt “misled” by Russian military and had led to “persistent tensions between Putin’s military leadership and himself.”

Putin was believed to have anticipated that Russian forces could occupy Ukraine easily, in order to unseat the Ukrainian government. He also wanted to install a pro-Russian system as Moscow looks to grow its reach over ex-Soviet states.

However, Russian forces faced stiff resistance from the Ukrainian forces as well as thousands of civilian fighters throughout Ukraine.

Russia only has captured Kherson to date. While a much-feared attack on Kyiv is yet to start, Kharkiv, which is the second largest city in Ukraine, continues to resist, and Lviv, the westernmost city, remains unaffected.
