SYDNEY, (Reuters) – The Solomon Islands declared that it will not permit a Chinese military base to be established in its Pacific Islands nation despite plans to sign a security pact.

After the initialization of a security draft by officials from both nations, Manasseh Sogavare’s office in Solomon Islands stated Friday that the accord does not allow China to build a military base.

According to a statement, “Government is aware of the security implications of hosting military bases. It will not let such an initiative take place without it’s supervision.”

Sogavare is not releasing details about the security agreement with China. This comes amid concerns over a draft leaked that would have allowed Chinese naval ships to replenish on the islands. It has not been signed by ministers.

Thursday’s request by the Federated States of Micronesia leader to the Solomon Islands was made because he had serious security concerns and fear that the Pacific would become involved in war between the United States and China.

New Zealand also warned against this pact. It claims it could disrupt long-standing regional security cooperation. Peter Dutton, Australia’s Defence minister, said on Friday that while he appreciated Sogavare’s view, he urged caution.

Dutton stated that China established 20 military bases in South China Sea, despite its assurances to the United States. Canberra was concerned about Beijing’s plans for the Pacific Islands.

They want a PNG military port [Papua New Guinea]. He said that they have one in Sri Lanka and are looking at places to put it.”

Because the Solomon Islands are so close to Australia, it would be a good idea for Australia to establish a Chinese military base there.

The Chinese are extremely aggressive. He said that the tactics they use to invade small islands nations are quite extraordinary.

China’s foreign minister said Thursday that the China-Solomon Islands security cooperation did not target any third parties and was not in conflict with other nations. The agreement included social order, property protection, natural disaster response, and protecting people and property.
