WASHINGTON (Reuters] – In honor of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s advocacy for women’s equality and rights, the U.S. Navy intends to name a new ship after her.

“She is a historic figure who vigorously advocated for women’s rights and gender equality,” Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said in a statement on Thursday.

She is the reason we have female Sailors and Marines of different backgrounds and talents in our ranks.

Del Toro cited Ginsburg’s work issuing the majority opinion for United States v. Virginia, a landmark 1996 case that struck down Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admissions policy.

Ginsburg was a symbol of American liberalism after she overcame sexism in legal practice to rise to the U.S. Supreme Court. There, she championed equality for women and other liberal causes throughout her 27 years as a judge. Her death from complications due to pancreatic carcinoma occurred on September 18, 2020.

Future USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg (T–AO 212) will feature a John Lewis class replenishment oiler ship (T–AO 212), which is a type of vessel that was named for late civil rights leader John Lewis. These oilers can store 162,000 barrels oil and transfer fuel to Navy’s operational carrier strike groups.
