Will Smith has resigned as an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences member, just days after hitting comedian Chris Rock at Los Angeles’ annual Oscars ceremony.

Smith stated in a Friday statement that he will “accept all further consequences” as the board of governors determines appropriate.

He stated, “My actions at 94th Academy Awards Presentation were shockingly painful and inexcusable.”

David Rubin, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stated that Mr. Will Smith had resigned from his position immediately. We will proceed with the disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith, for violating Academy’s Standards of Conduct. This is before our next board meeting scheduled for April 18.

Smith previously apologized for his actions to Rock and the academy. Smith was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor for “King Richard” just minutes after having slapped Rock.

He said, “Love will make it do crazy things” in his acceptance speech. This was one apparent reference to his attack against the comedian.

Smith confronted Rock after Rock made jokes about Jada Pinkett Smith’s close-cropped hair. Smith has alopecia which can cause hair loss. Smith struck Rock and then returned to his seats, screaming profanities at Rock. Rock shook off his attack and went on to present the award for the Best Documentary Film Feature.

The Oscars organization announced Wednesday that its board of governors initiated a discipline proceeding against Smith because he had violated the group’s conduct standards. The board stated that it would determine what actions it will take (if any) at its next meeting, April 18.

Smith’s resignation preemptively means that the academy is unsure what it will do next. Smith’s resignation means that he will not be able to vote in future Oscars. However, he may still be eligible for nominations and even win.

Los Angeles Police Department ready to arrest SmithRock was not allowed to press charges during the Sunday awards ceremony, according to an official producer. The academy stated that Smith refused to leaveThe ceremony following his strike with the comedian.

Rock has, however, refrained from dwelling too much on the incident. Rock told the crowd during a comedy performance earlier this weekIn Boston, he said that he was still processing what had happened.

Smith has been one Hollywood’s most financially successful stars for many decades. He was a blockbuster star like “Independence Day” or “Men in Black”. In what appeared to be a bid for Oscars glory, he also played serious roles in dramatic parts such as “Ali” or “The Pursuit of Happyness.” His long-awaited Academy Award will always be linked to the episode that was the most dramatic in show history.

I have responded directly to the Academy’s hearing notice regarding discipline and will accept all of its consequences. At the 94th Academy Awards, my behavior was shocking, inexcusable, and painful.

Chris and his loved ones are among the many people I’ve hurt. I betrayed Academy’s trust. Other nominees and winners were denied the opportunity to be recognized for their exceptional work. I am heartbroken. It is my desire to bring the attention back to those who are worthy of it and to allow the Academy back to its incredible support for creativity and artistic expression in film.

Therefore, I have decided to resign from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and accept all consequences that the Board may deem appropriate.

It takes time to change and I’m determined to do the necessary work to make sure that violence does not overtake reason.
