(Reuters) – The European Union on Sunday accused Russian troops of committing atrocities within the Kyiv area after the mayor of the city of Bucha stated 300 residents had been killed throughout a month-long occupation by Russian forces.

“Shocked by information of atrocities dedicated by Russian forces. EU assists Ukraine in documenting battle crimes,” EU international coverage chief Josep Borrell stated on Twitter (NYSE:), including all circumstances wanted to be pursued by the Worldwide Courtroom of Justice.

Ukraine stated on Saturday its forces had retaken all areas round Kyiv, claiming full management of the capital area for the primary time since Russia launched its invasion on Feb 24. The mayor of Bucha, a liberated city 37 km (23 miles) northwest of the capital, stated 300 residents had been killed by the Russian military.

“Shocked by haunting photographs of atrocities dedicated by Russian military in Kyiv liberated area,” the president of the EU Council grouping the bloc’s member states, Charles Michel, commented on Twitter.

Russia has beforehand denied targetting civilians and rejected allegations of battle crimes in what it calls a “particular army operation” in Ukraine. The Russian defence ministry in Moscow didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark when requested on Sunday about our bodies present in Bucha.

Michel stated the EU was aiding Ukraine and non-governmental organisations in gathering the required proof for the prosecution of crimes in worldwide courts.

“Additional EU sanctions and assist are on their approach,” he added.
