REUTERS/Fred Greaves/File photo(Reuters) – Police said Tuesday that a 27-year old man was taken into custody for illegally possessing a firearm or machine gun. He was critically injured during a Sacramento shooting which left six victims dead.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, Smiley Martin was taken by officers in California’s capital and is now being treated for his wounds at a nearby hospital. After a doctor determines that the suspect is suitable for imprisonment, authorities will release him.
Martin was 26-year-old Dandre Martin’s brother. Police said Martin was taken into custody as a “related suspect”. Dandre was charged with assault and illegal firearm possession.
Police didn’t provide details on the alleged roles of the shooters or if they are still looking for other suspects. Kathy Lester from the Police Department stated that there were “multiple” attackers in the attack that resulted in six deaths and twelve injuries.
At 2:05 a.m. GMT (0900 GMT), gunfire broke out near the Golden 1 Center (home of the National Basketball Association’s Sacramento Kings). Before Sunday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, the team observed a moment silence.
According to police, the incident occurred after an altercation. Police are now asking the public for assistance in finding videos from that event that have been shared on social media. According to the Sacramento Bee, the suspects were at the nearby nightclub before the attack.
Police said that 12 of the victims survived from gunshot injuries, which ranged from minor to severe but were stable.
Investigators claimed that they had found over 100 used shell casings and one handgun at the crime scene. They also said that the search warrants were executed.
It took place just hours after Tyler The Creator’s performance at the Golden 1 Center, and in an area which was being revitalized for entertainment.
California’s capitol was shaken by the shooting. As political leaders relaxed strict COVID-19 regulations, bars and restaurants started to fill with those who had been displaced from California due to the pandemic.
