Mailchimp Security Exploit Leaks Decentraland Mails
  • Decentraland announces that its newsletter subscribers’ email addresses have been leaked.
  • The hackers viewed more than 300 Mailchimp account accounts.
  • Tezos also suffered an attack via Mailchimp.

On April 4, Decentraland announced that malicious actors acquired newsletter subscribers’ email addresses due to a Mailchimp data breach. This announcement was made in a blog posting. It revealed that hackers could be pretending to Decentraland, and may send emails to subscribers.

According to Mailchimp, the hackers viewed approximately 300 Mailchimp accounts – successfully exporting audience data from 102 of them. Customers in finance and cryptocurrency were targeted by the hackers. The hackers gained API keys to an unknown number of customers. These API keys have now been disabled.

Siobhan Symyth, Chief Information Security Officer Mailchimp said that Mailchimp immediately notifies account owners if they are aware of an unauthorized access. Smyth stated that any further access will be immediately suspended. “We also recommend two-factor authentication and other account security measures for our users as added measures to keep accounts and passwords secure.”

Decentraland issued a warning to its subscribers in response to the information leak. This blog posted cautionary advice, such as not clicking suspicious links in emails or checking for the right addresses. Decentraland also actively seeks out phishing sites.

On March 26, a malicious actor was detected by Mailchimp accessing a tool used by the company’s support team. To gain access to private information, they used social engineering.

We quickly acted to remedy the problem by removing access from the compromised employees accounts, and taking steps to protect other employees.

Cybercriminals have been attacking cryptocurrency and financial-related firms. Trezor cryptocurrency wallet was the first to be affected by this vulnerability. Hackers sent emails that prompted Trezor users to reset their hardware wallet PINs by downloading malicious software – once installed, hackers could then steal customers’ crypto.

This follows the hack that resulted in losses totaling $625M. Hackers gained access to large amounts of cryptocurrency by exploiting the blockchain.
