Bobby Wagner, an NFL linebacker, wanted another challenge while he prepares to move on from football. He represented himself in the 2022 free agency market, after being released from the Seattle Seahawks as a cost-saving measure.

Wagner (31 years old) agreed Monday to a 5-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams. The deal could be worth $65 million. Wagner stated that the agreement contains player and team-based incentives, which Wagner called “attainable.” Wagner called the agreement “a win-win for me as well as for them.”

Wagner spoke with CNBC Monday night to discuss his new contract. He also explained why he negotiated the terms again without an agent. Wagner admitted that this is not his first foray without representation.

He said that he was always challenging himself, not only on the football field, but also outside it.

Removing emotions

“Crazy part about all this,” Wagner tweeted on March 11, “I played there for 10 years & I didn’t even hear it from them that I wasn’t coming back.”

This Twitter reply came just days after reports that the Seahawks were planning to release the eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker. This quick move was a lifesaver for the team, saving $16 million. This club competes alongside the Rams in the NFC West. It is currently rebuilding. Their Super Bowl winner quarterback Russell Wilson was also sold to the Denver Broncos. Pete Carroll, head coach and John Schneider are the general managers. took the blameWe are sorry for not being able to communicate with Wagner.

Wagner expressed his disappointment with the Seahawks handling of the issue Monday night.

Wagner stated to CNBC that he never intended to leave. Wagner said that he had planned to continue playing there his entire career. You’re upset when it happened. Add on the fact that you learned, and you feel even worse. Wagner stated that Wagner took some time to process his emotions before he got back into it.

When CNBC asked for comments on this matter, the Seahawks spokesperson replied that he was a “terrific player” and wished him all the best.

Wagner was selected by the Seahawks as their second pick in the NFL Draft 2012. In contract talks, Wagner represented himself since 2015, when he was offered a $43million deal by the Seahawks.

But this was a different time.

Wagner stated that the first time was easier as I had a good understanding of the team and its history. “Free agency this time was a bit different because you have to reach out to all the GMs – it was another challenge that I wanted to take on for myself.”

The NFL Players Association has a contact list for general managers. Wagner obtained this list and started to “send out text and email reminders the teams that myself I represent, and they can contact me if needed.”

Deal worth $65,000,000

Wagner stated that he looked at past contracts and players’ stats to determine Wagner’s value. He also had to get over his age stigma.

Wagner stated that older linebackers don’t get the right value due to their age, as they prefer younger players. Wagner mentioned other Pro Bowl linebackers, including the Baltimore Ravens’ icon. Wagner said, “There’s the idea that you can only play so long.”

The Ravens and Dallas Cowboys were among the teams that reached out to each other. Wagner explained that the negotiation process required teams to forget “the notion that if they sent something low, or send something that may be not appealing to me, then it would be offensive.”

He said, “I felt that I was in an ideal situation in which I could manage my emotions no matter what stage in my career.” I just wanted the best deal possible for myself.

That was what the Rams did.

Wagner’s five-year contract, worth $50 million, is a deal which can be extended to $65 million with incentives. The deal includes Wagner being able to play 90% of defense snaps. Spotrac, which tracks contracts in sports, reports that there were nearly $10 million worth of roster bonuses as well as another Pro Bowl selection.

He stated that these are “very achievable incentives.” Wagner said he had to look at the salary caps of teams to determine “what team you are working with.” Certain teams have less cap space than others, while some have more flexibility. You must create your market.

Another criteria was met in the Super Bowl Champion Rams’ deal: Wagner, an LA native, is allowed to play at home. Additionally, he intends to continue living in Seattle.

Wagner said that he was a flirtatious man who had an affair with Cowboys. It was an actual thing. There were many discussions. It is a joy to be with you. [Cowboys defensive coordinator]I have much respect for Dan Quinn. However, their financial needs were different than ours. We could not agree. He said that there was mutuality.

“Between the Rams and Cowboys – those are teams that have been around for a long time and have a lot of history,” Wagner added. Being a part any one of these franchises increases your fame. That’s what I did.

Wagner hopes to lead the NFL team.

Wagner asked Wagner to stop stating that he felt negative about the idea of using NFL agents when discussing his decision to represent himself. Wagner stated, “I don’t do this to be an agent. It’s for my growth.”

Wagner stated that Wagner was also able build stronger relationships with NFL executive team members and learned more about football’s business side. This is Wagner’s goal: to become a future leader of his team.

Wagner, if he achieves this goal, would become one of only a few Black NFL presidents.

In 2020, the NFL appointed Jason Wright as its first Black president of the Washington Commanders. The Ravens hired the secondSashi Brown, an executive from the NBA and NFL was hired in February 2022. The NBA’s position in pro basketball declined from an a league-high sevenFrom three Black CEOs for a Black team in 2007, to just three today, MLB also lost its first Black chief executives after 2007. Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter resigned.

Wagner stated that many players end up in coaching and media. He has higher goals.

Wagner said, “That’s what people give you.” While I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with it, that’s where we end up. The box they put us into is that we cannot be the president or chief executive officer.

Then he said, “What happens to players is that we become trapped in our bubble.” We get stuck in our world, and regardless of how long you play – three years or 10 – we get so stuck and think that the world is a certain way. We don’t experience anything other than being on a football team.

Wagner stated, “If you start from where you started and learn the business, then understand the locker room. That makes you more valuable.”
