REUTERS/Maxim Zmeyev(Reuters) – The week-end inflation rate for Russia fell from 1.16% to 0.99% on April 1, to take the total increase in consumer price to 9.99%. Data from Rosstat’s statistics service showed Wednesday.
Consumer prices increased by 2.72 percent in the three months ending December 31, 2012.
Russia’s inflation has been accelerating rapidly in recent weeks. The fall of the rouble, to an all-time low, boosted the demand for wide variety goods including food staples and cars. It is expected that prices will continue to climb.
The prices of almost all items, including vegetables, sugar and clothes, rose further in the week ending April 1st. However this was slower than the previous weeks because the rouble rebounded from the March record lows.
According to the central bank which aims at annual inflation of 4% annually, it held its key interest rate at 20% in March. It warned that there would be an inflation spike and an economic recession.
Finam brokerage polled 75% online and predicted 2022 inflation exceeding 20%. But analysts claim that any further inflationary threats will be reduced by lower real incomes.
