WASHINGTON — The Senate on Thursday passed a bill to ban imports of oil and gas from Russia, the latest measure in the U.S. government wide effort to economically isolate and penalize the Kremlin for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

This legislation was passed by a vote of 100-0. It prohibits importation from Russia of any oil, gas or coal. The legislation was signed by President Joe Biden almost one month ago an executive order This mandated the exact same steps.

Biden’s order was codified into law by the Senate bill. It will be much more difficult for future presidents to undo it. After being stalled in the Senate for several weeks, the legislation was passed.

The ban on oil imports was lifted immediately. the unanimous Senate approval of a bill to revoke Russia’s permanent normal trade relationsUnited States of America, also known as the “most favoured nation” status. It would also cut off the existing trade relations between Belarus and America, an important Russian ally.

In a statement, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) stated that the package was about “bringing all tools of economic pressure on Vladimir Putin’s oligarch cronies”.

“Putin’s Russia does not deserve to be a part of the economic order that has existed since the end of World War II,” he said.

The House is expected to vote on Thursday afternoon for both the trade status legislation and the oil ban bill. Both should pass by overwhelming majority.
