NEW YORK (Reuters), The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will on Thursday announce its decision on 36 refineries seeking to be exempted from mandates for biofuel blending, according to a government notification.

More than 60 applications have been filed to the EPA for so-called Small Refinery Exemptions. These exemptions are sought by small refineries who believe that the high cost of blending biofuels such as ethanol into fuels could force them out of business. Thursday’s announcement comes after a 2020 court case that narrowed down the requirements for which facilities are eligible for relief.
