(Reuters) – Puerto Rico’s power grid was still out of service on Friday. This is the second consecutive day of a major blackout on the Caribbean island. It may have occurred due to a power plant fire.

A PowerOutage.US count showed that approximately half of the nearly 1.4 million U.S. homes and businesses were out of power.

Schools had to cancel classes the following day. Some courts also had to be closed on Friday because of the blackout. According to media reports, 162,000 of the 1.3 million customers without water were left without access due to the blackout.

It is Friday, 7 a.m. and there are no power lines in Laguna Gardens. “I officially lost all of my food and couldn’t work. And what little hope that I had, I turned to courage,” tweeted a Twitter user (NYSE:), Nicole Shantei. She was referring to San Juan neighborhood.

LUMA Energy Puerto Rico said late Thursday night that it was expecting to continue work on Friday in order to restore power for 380,000 of its customers, due the immense scale and severity of the problem.

It stated that it continues to make efforts to restart high-voltage lines and generation units.

LUMA stated that the exact reason for the outage on island was not known. However, a Costa Sur plant circuit breaker failure could be at fault.

A video posted by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority on Twitter on Wednesday night shows a fire at a Guayanilla power plant. This is a small town located in Southwest Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Maria caused power outages in Puerto Rico and exposed the fragility of the electricity grid.
