(Reuters.) Ferrero is an Italian confectionary chain that has recalled Kinder chocolates from American shelves. This was due to possible salmonella contamination.

Ferrero North America announced on Thursday that Kinder Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment (and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats Basket) are being recalled after salmonella was found in their manufacturing process.

Ferrero had earlier this week removed Kinder Surprise eggs from UK shelves. Ferrero added that the chocolate affected was produced in Belgium. The voluntary recall could be expanded to other countries.

Ferrero said that although there have been no illnesses reported in the United States, Ferrero has voluntarily recalled products due to salmonella cases in people who have eaten products made in Europe.

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has begun to investigate dozens of suspected and reported cases of salmonella related to chocolate consumption in at least nine European countries.

Infections with salmonella bacteria are possible, particularly in older people or children.

There have been confirmed or probable cases of Salmonella in Britain, France and Ireland as a result of eating chocolates.
