(Reuters) – Iran said on Saturday that it had imposed sanctions on 15 more U.S. officials, including former Army Chief of Staff George Casey and former President Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani, as months of talks to revive a 2015 nuclear deal have stalled.

Nearly all those named were employed during Trump’s administration that imposed sanctions upon Iranian officials, politicians, and companies. It also withdrew America from the Tehran nuclear deal with international powers.

In a statement carried by local media, the Iranian foreign ministry accused the U.S. officials of supporting “terrorist groups and terrorist acts” against Iran, and Israel’s “repressive acts” in the region and against the Palestinian people.

Indirect talks between Iran, the United States and Vienna to save the agreement have been stalled for eleven months. Both sides claim that Washington and Tehran must take political action in order to resolve the remaining issues.

The new Iranian sanctions target Gen. Austin Scott Miller (ex-commander of U.S forces in Afghanistan), former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross (U.S.), and several ex-ambassadors.

Iran announced a similar action in January. 51 Americans were placed under sanctions, most of which came from the U.S. military. It was in response to the killing of General Qassem Solimani by a drone strike in Iraq in 2020.

It imposed sanctions against Trump last year and other senior U.S. officials.
