RIO GRANDE CITY (Texas) – Saturday saw a small gathering of protestors outside a sheriff’s office in southwestern Texas. A 26-year old woman was allegedly charged with murder for performing what they called a “self-induced abortion.”
According to Valley Central.com, Lizelle Herrera was taken into custody by Starr County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. Her bond is set at $500,000
Herrera, according to a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office was arrested when it became apparent that she had “intentionally or knowingly caused” the death of a person by herself-induced abortion.
Sheriff’s offices refused to comment on the report.
On Saturday, about 20 protestors gathered at the Starr County Jail in support of La Frontera Fund (an abortion aid group in Rio Grande Valley).
Rickie Gonzalez, founder of the group said Saturday that “She miscarried at hospital” and that she confided to staff that she attempted to induce her abortion.
She said that the group could not confirm specific details but it was believed to be Texas’ first arrest since last year’s new law.
Abortions are prohibited at six weeks of pregnancy, which is when most women don’t know they are pregnant. There are no exceptions for pregnancies that result from incest or rape.
Texas law allows private citizens to sue those who assist a woman with an abortion. A minimum of $10,000 can be granted to individuals for the successful filing of lawsuits.
In December, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the ban but there are still legal challenges.
