SEGA, the Gaming Giant Could Use NFTs for SuperGame after Doubts last Year
  • SEGA may integrate NFTs into its SuperGame cornerstone project.
  • An executive of the company said future gaming that involves new tech such as NFTs is “natural.”
  • After previous doubts about NFTs, the company registered a trademark for “SEGA NFTs.”

SEGA has revealed more details about its five-year plan and could involve NFTs after shelving plans to experiment with NFTs last year, according to an interview posted on their recruitment page involving members of SEGA’s top management.

Talking about SEGA’s SuperGame — the company’s “cornerstone” of its five-year plan — Producer Masayoshi Kikuchi said that “games have a history of expansion through the connection of various cultures and technologies.” He cited social networking and live streaming as examples.

Cloud gaming and NFT are two of the many new possibilities for gaming’s future.

Kikuchi also said they’re still experimenting with their SuperGame to see if different titles can be linked together.

SEGA originally stated that it planned to include NFTs into its development plans in November 2021. The negative reaction of fans forced SEGA to stop the plans. It was then believed that this plan was just a scheme to make money in the gaming industry.

In the same year, they shared with the public that they plan to launch a SuperGame in five more years. At that time it was thought SuperGame was one title. It was revealed that it wasn’t.

“We have development of AAA titles that cross over SEGA’s comprehensive range of technologies,” explained Executive Vice President Shuji Utsumi. “We will aim to achieve this in our five-year plan.”

Expounding further, Utsumi said that the various titles are currently in the works within the SuperGame framework, and they will be “interactive titles that go beyond the traditional framework of games.” The company is also planning to explore live streaming as they try to create “new entertainment.”

Utsumi suggested that SuperGame should be multi-platform, multi-language, worldwide development and simultaneous release. Katsuya Herai, SEGA General Manager, said that initial phases are being worked on and SuperGame is well underway.

In addition to NFT integration, SuperGame could incorporate cloud technology.

You should recall that SEGA NFT, the Japanese gaming company, registered a trademark in December 2021 for SEGA NFT that contained the SEGA NFT logo, despite doubts regarding its future plans.
