Airfare surged 20% over pre-pandemic levels as inflation hit vacations

As fuel costs rise and travel demand increases, airfare prices are on the rise.

The Adobe Digital Economy Index published Tuesday’s data showing that consumers spent $8.8B on U.S. domestic airline tickets in March, an increase of 28% over March 2019, prior to the pandemic. However, fares rose 20%. Only 12% of bookings rose.

The airline executives are confident they will be able to pass the full surge in jetfuel to the travelers. This is despite two years of Covid lockdowns.

The Adobe data shows that online travel spending has increased by 8 percent compared to 2019, while bookings have increased by 33%.
