NY Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin arrested in campaign finance fraud case: sources

New York Lt. Governor Two people with knowledge of the situation Tuesday said that Brian Benjamin surrendered to authorities in order to be charged with campaign finance fraud related to a previous campaign.

Benjamin is scheduled to appear before the Manhattan Federal Court on Tuesday. Gov. Kathy Hochul couldn’t be reached by her office immediately for comment regarding the arrest. Benjamin’s representative could also not be reached.

According to reports, the FBI and Manhattan federal prosecutors have been investigating Benjamin’s involvement in a scheme for campaign finance fraud. Two sources who were familiar with the matter said that subpoenas had been issued to help with the investigation.

Investigators looked also into Benjamin’s involvement in the distribution of state funds to contributors or their projects.

WNBC had previously requested comment from both a U.S. attorney spokesperson and an FBI spokesperson regarding Benjamin.

Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate Majority Leader, did not respond to requests for comment.

Governor Benjamin appointed Benjamin lieutenant governor. In 2021, Kathy Hochul was appointed lieutenant governor by Gov. He served previously as New York State Senator in District 30. This district includes Harlem, East Harlem(El Barrio), Washington Heights (Washington Heights), Hamilton Heights, Morningside Heights, Washington Heights, and Washington Heights.
