U.S. orders some personnel to leave Shanghai consulate -Breaking

REUTERS/Aly Song WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. State Department ordered Monday that non-emergency U.S. employees leave Shanghai’s consulate because of a rise in COVID cases. This was in response to China’s efforts to contain the virus.
Friday’s announcement by the State Department stated that all non-emergency staff could leave the consulate at their will. The reason for the mandatory departure of these workers is unclear.
One of Shanghai’s most controversial practices was to seperate COVID-positive kids from their parents. Since then, some concessions have been made by authorities.
Monday’s announcement by the State Department was prompted in part by concerns about parents and children becoming separated.
Shanghai has been fighting China’s most severe COVID-19 epidemic since it first appeared in Wuhan at the end of 2019.
