REUTERS/Brendan McDermid(Reuters) – Yelp (NYSE:) Inc announced Tuesday that it would cover the expenses of its employees and dependents who travel to other states for abortion services beginning next month. This makes it the latest U.S. firm to provide similar benefits for workers.
It will offer travel benefits for U.S. workers who have to travel to states such as Texas or Oklahoma, which restrict access to abortion.
“As a remote-first company with a distributed workforce, this new benefit allows our U.S. employees and their dependents to have equitable access to reproductive care, regardless of where they live,” Miriam Warren, Yelp’s chief diversity officer, said in a statement.
Others have also pledged similar support for their Texas-based workers.
Citigroup In March, Inc (NYSE:), began covering travel expenses of employees traveling out of the country for abortions. It was the first U.S. major bank to do so.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed Tuesday a bill making it illegal in Oklahoma to have an abortion, except for medical emergencies. He penalized those who did so with up to $100,000 fines and ten years imprisonment.
By the end June, the Supreme Court will rule on a case involving a Republican backed Mississippi law. It gives its conservative majority a chance for the historic 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling which legalized abortion across the country to invalidate or repeal it.
