Amazon has a new name for its free streaming TV service

AmazonIMDb TV, three years ago, was the first company to jump into the ad-supported streaming video market. The product will get a new name later this month.

IMDb TV will change to Amazon Freevee starting April 27, according to the company. This name better describes the unrestricted nature of the service.

In recent years, the ad-supported space for video-on-demand has seen a lot of interest and is gaining momentum. the coronavirus pandemicAs more shows and movies were streamed online, the market grew. Amazon is competing in the streaming marketplace. Prime Video can be purchased as either a $9 per-month subscription, or as an integral part of the full Prime membership at $15/month. Amazon can compete with other providers on this end, such as Netflix, DisneyHulu +, HBO Max, NBCUniversal’s Peacock and Hulu Plus, although some have free ad supported tiers.

While paid subscriptions still hold the majority of streaming services, ad-supported options are growing in popularity. According to the Ad-supported Streaming Services Survey, 34% of U.S. households with video streaming capabilities used ad supported streaming services in January 2021. Nielsen data.

IMDb was the 1998 acquisition of Amazon’s film- and TV website. launchedIMDb Freedive will offer the streaming service for free in 2019. Amazon announced Wednesday that it has seen “tremendous growth” in its active monthly users, more than tripling over the last two years.

Amazon has not released IMDb’s active user metrics, but said in MayThe company boasts 120,000,000 monthly active users on all of its ad -supported video content. This includes IMDb TV, Twitch as well as live sports channels.

Amazon plans to increase Freevee’s original TV and movie collection in the next year, according to Amazon.

Jennifer Salke from Amazon Studios stated that she is looking to build on the momentum by introducing more original and appealing Originals and to make Freevee the leading AVOD service, with content consumers crave.
