It seems that the Ethereum merger everyone is waiting for has been delayed once again. Developers are working on the upgrade and it is estimated to reach completion “a few months after” June.

People expected the merger to happen by the middle of next year, considering the success in the testing phase. But, it isn’t true. This latest setback is surprising as Proof-of-Stake migration (PoW), has been delayed indefinitely since its original proposal.

Although there were setbacks, all indications are positive that Ethereum’s mainnet and the beacon chain will merge to form a Proof of Stake (PoS), network. This is expected to happen sometime in the next year.

Tim Beiko (an Ethereum developer) posted some comforting words on Twitter yesterday. He said that devs were in the last stretch of the project’s completion.

He also said that “It won’t be June, but likely in the few months after. No firm date yet, but we’re definitely in the final chapter of PoW on Ethereum.”

These remarks caused quite a stir, not just among Ethereum supporters, but among the detractors. This led Beiko to follow up his previous comments by saying that “it can be hard to parse the progress in The Merge when you aren’t deep in the process.”

Beiko stated that PoW mining is less popular due to the difficulty Bomb (an automatic increase in mining difficulty).

Beiko claims that the difficulty bombs, which will make Ethereum blocks very slow around May, will be visible on Ethereum. These blocks might make it difficult for The Merge to move forward if they become too slow.
