Mixed earnings cap gains in European shares ahead of ECB decision -Breaking

(Reuters) – European shares remained steady after a mix of earnings. Investors waited for the European Central Bank’s announcement amid rising inflation risks.

After a strong Wall Street finish and gains in Asian shares, the pan-European Index was unchanged at 0722 GMT. Euro zone shares rose 0.2%

Hermes, Birkin’s bag manufacturer, saw 2.2% growth after beating its quarterly estimates. This was due to strong demand for luxury accessories in Europe and the United States.

Travel & leisure stocks gained the most among sectors, with low-cost airline Wizz Air up 5.3% despite a gloomy forecast.

Sweden’s Ericsson(BS:), which was criticised for failing to handle a probe into bribery in Iraq, fell 8.7% following a warning from U.S. regulators. The company also reported a drop in its first quarter core earnings.

The ECB’s decision at 1145 GMT could give a more precise schedule for its end of the bond buying programme and any subsequent interest rate increases.

It is behind other central banks which have raised interest rates since last year.

Italian motorway and airport operator Atlantia increased 5.3% following the announcement by the Holding Company of Italy’s Benetton and the U.S. Investment Fund Blackstone (NYSE:), that they would spend as much as 12.7 billion euros ($14billion) in order to privatize the company.
