WASHINGTON (Reuters] – An Ohio jury convicted a man who claimed he had been following President Donald Trump’s orders while he stole items from the U.S. Capitol last year during the riot. It was another significant victory for prosecutors.

The District of Columbia Federal Jury found Dustin Thompson (38), guilty of all the charges against him, including obstruction of a formal proceeding and theft of public property.

Thompson confessed to having entered the Capitol and stolen a glass of alcohol and a coat rack during riots.

Thompson, however, used a new legal strategy to argue before the jury that Thompson was acting on Trump’s orders and that Trump is ultimately responsible.

“Besides being ordered by the president to go to the Capitol, I don’t know what I was thinking,” Thompson told the jury, according to CNN. “I was caught up in the moment.”

U.S. district judge Reggie Walton who oversaw the trial will sentence Thompson during a hearing scheduled for July. Thompson was ordered to be held in prison until the hearing.

U.S. Justice Department now has all three Jan.6 prosecutions, which have gone to jury trial. In a nonjury trial, one defendant was found not guilty.

Around 800 have been accused of crimes in connection with the Jan. 6th attack.
