Ukraine war most dangerous since Cuban missile crisis

According to the author of “Sapiens”, Russia’s increasing risk of using nuclear weapons, chemical warfare or other forms to increase its aggression to win is a growing threat to humanity.

While acknowledging the current threat of nuclear war is “not very likely,” Harari said that everybody — governments and individuals — should be “very concerned.”

Harari cautioned that the West’s allies should not try to prevent such actions by trying to change Russia’s regime. Instead, they should be focusing on strengthening Ukraine in order to defeat Russian forces on ground and restore peaceful coexistence.
“If you have any fantasies of marching to Moscow,” he advised, noting that these moves could further anger the Kremlin.
The goal of war must be to defend the Ukrainian freedom and not change Moscow. “This is up to Russian people,” he said.
Historic turning point
Harari, who is also a Lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Department of History, stated that the end result of the war may mark an important turning point in government management of future threats.
If Russian President Vladimir Putin wins the war, he said, more countries would be inclined — or forced — to increase their military spending to the detriment of other public services.
While Harari estimated that Russia would invest around 20% in defense expenditures, the amount is not known. Recent moves by countries to raise their defense spending have been evident. Germany made an announcement just days before the war that it was significantly increasing its defense spending. more than 2% of its economic output.
If we do not take precautions, we could fall into war and violence again. This will force countries to invest more in tanks and missiles.

He stated that if defense budgets were 20% around the globe instead of 6% it would cost us our health and our wellbeing, as well as the ability to fight other threats like climate change.
“This would spell doom for humanity,” he stated, noting that peaceful solutions are in everyone’s best interests, including those of Ukraine and its neighbors.
He said, “It’s about protecting the peace and the world that we have grown accustomed to.” It’s become so routine that we have come to take it as a given. We will fall into the trap of war and violence if we do not take care. Countries are forced to spend more on weapons and ammunitions, and less on education and nursing.
Harari saw some reason to be cautious optimistic if the Western Allies could bring about peace.
Putin losing and being seen as losing will protect the prior order. “When there’s a norm, and someone violates it and is punished for it, this strengthens that norm,” he stated.
