TAIPEI, (Reuters) – Taiwan’s technology hub is a country of “global significance”, and the security implications have consequences for the rest of the world. On Friday, Senator Bob Menendez spoke with President TsaiIng-wen.

A bipartisan group comprising six U.S. legislators made the comment while visiting Taipei. It was a gesture of support for the democratic island against Chinese pressure.

Although the United States does not have formal relations with Chinese-claimed Taiwan, it is their most significant international supporter and arms supplier.

Menendez said to Tsai that Taiwan is responsible for 90% of all high end semiconductors in the world. He also stated that the country has global consequences and impacts.

China will be furious at the mention of Taiwan in his visit. China considers the island one of its provinces.

Menendez admitted that China was unhappy with the visit of the delegation, but this did not stop the delegation from supporting Taiwan.

The U.S. has offered support to Taiwan, as has the Biden administration. They have repeatedly spoken of their “rock-solid commitment” to democratically run Taiwan.

These factors have increased tensions in Sino-U.S. relationships.

This delegation arrived in Taiwan late Thursday night from Australia to embark on an unexpected two-day visit. They will meet with Joseph Wu (Taiwan’s foreign minister) and Chiu Kuocheng, the defense minister.

Menendez is a Democrat and a strong supporter for Taiwan. A bill he proposed in February would force the United States into negotiations to rename Taiwan’s Washington embassy as the “Taiwan Representative Office”.
