(Reuters) – A family representing an African refugee who was shot and killed by a Michigan officer at a traffic stop on Thursday demanded that the police dismiss him from his position and bring criminal charges against him. This came just a day after a footage of the shooting was made public.

Patrick Lyoya was a Congolese refugee of 26 years who was Black and was attacked by an officer regarding a stungun. He was stopped at a Grand Rapids intersection during routine traffic stops. This officer is not known.

Lyoya’s parents, speaking through a translator, expressed their grief at the death of their son on Thursday. They said that they didn’t believe this could occur in the United States.

Peter Lyoya was his father. He said, “My heart breaks to see an officer be on top my son and to shot him in the head with a gun, it’s really awful.” I’m asking justice for Patrick.

A statement released by the governor stated that the family fled conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo to seek refuge in the United States.

Ben Crump who represents the family as a U.S. civil Rights attorney, stated that the officer failed to follow basic training and that the use fatal force was not justified.

He said, referring to video footage: “Another senseless murder of a Black man in America by those who are supposed to be protecting them.” You can see how a police officer turns a minor traffic stop in to a fatal execution.

Crump once again called for federal reform of the police force, noting Lyoya’s murder is just one in an increasing number of police killings racial minorities by police, such as George Floyd and Breonna Tyler, which could have been prevented.

Taylor’s mother Tamika Palmer attended the Grand Rapids press conference.

The Detroit Free Press reports that hundreds of protestors gathered after the video was released to demand accountability, police reform and demonstrate against the shooting.

Lyoya was riding with her front passenger, April 4. She was stopped by an officer after he checked the license plate. It was not compatible with the vehicle.

Lyoya got out of the car and was pursued by the officer. Video footage of Lyoya trying to stop the officer using his Taser shows a short chase that ended at Lyoya’s home.

Video footage shows that the officers pulled out his pistol and shot one bullet in his back.

Officer, who was not charged, is currently on paid leave. The investigation has been initiated by the Michigan State Police.

CNN was informed Wednesday by Kent County Prosecutors that they would make a determination about criminal charges after their investigation is complete.
