(Reuters) – Attorneys representing the family of a Black male who was shot and killed by a Grand Rapids officer in Michigan earlier this month, are scheduled to release Tuesday’s findings from an independent autopsy.

Ven Johnson and Ben Crump, civil rights lawyers in Detroit have set a news conference at 10:30 AM EST to discuss results from an autopsy on Patrick Lyoya (26), who was killed and shot on April 4.

Crump released a statement saying that Werner Spitz was the forensic pathologist who performed the independent autopsy.

Lyoya was a Congolese refugee who died in his home. This has angered family members and sparked protests at Grand Rapids from activists who claim it is the latest instance of police violence towards young Black men.

Lyoya’s loved ones are demanding that police remove the officer who shot Lyoya and indict him.

Police released video footage last week of the incident from the dashboard and body cameras of officers, as well as from neighboring surveillance cameras.

Lyoya is seen stepping out from the car and walking on a wet street. She seems confused, asking “What did you do?” The policeman asks Lyoya repeatedly for her driver’s license, and then tells him to go back in the car.

Lyoya seems to be following orders, but then closes his driver’s side door. He then attempts to leave, resisted the officer attempts to arrest him.

The two men engage in a quick foot chase. Lyoya then is killed.

After Lyoya was stopped by the officer for suspicions regarding his license plate, the incident started.

Grand Rapids Police officials placed the officer on administrative leave and asked for the investigation to be conducted by the Michigan State Police.
