National Urban League urges Twitter to reject Musk bid

TwitterThe board of directors must consider rejecting Elon Musk’sMarc Morial, President of the National Urban League, stated that the bidder for the social media firm was motivated by the potential harm it could cause to users’ civil rights.

Morial, in a Monday letter to Bret Taylor (Twitter Chairman), stated that Musk “expressed concerns views” regarding content moderation. These are contrary to principles of “creating an online community safe for marginalized populations and protecting our democracy.”

Morial demanded that Twitter’s board consult the civil rights community prior to making a decision regarding Musk’s offer. He also asked Taylor for a further discussion.

Morial stated that Musk’s ownership would likely lead to many of the worrying activities we observe on Twitter. “Without key safeguards and protections, many of the troubling activities such as white supremacist propagandism, voter suppression via election disinformation and algorithmic bias, discrimination and hardening our national discourse, are likely proliferate without key protections,” Morial said. “The potential to negatively impact millions directly and our nation’s culture and democracy indirectly are exponential and should be part of your analysis in reviewing this — or any other — offer of purchase.”

Musk sent Taylor a letter in which he stated that he invested in Twitter because he believed it could be the global platform for free speech. He also revealed in an a securities filing. Musk has been known for attacking journalists and other critics of his company and himself. He also doesn’t understand free speech.

A good indicator of whether freedom of speech exists is: Does someone who you disagree with be allowed to speak what you are against? Musk declared Thursday, at the TED2022 Conference in Vancouver that if it is so then there’s free speech.

Musk called himself a “free speech absolutist” and stated that he believes Twitter’s algorithm should become public to allow users greater control over what tweets appear in their newsfeed. Musk acknowledged that there needs to be content moderation. He also said, “Twitter should follow the laws of the nation.”

Musk, Twitter and Facebook did not respond immediately to my request for comment.
