(Reuters) – Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:) Inc requested that a California judge halt a suit against a state agency. It alleges widespread race discrimination in its electric car manufacturing plant. According to the lawsuit, the state must continue to investigate and give the possibility of settling the case.
Tesla revealed in Monday’s filing at Oakland state court that it was being separately investigated by U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) said that the U.S. is separately investigating Tesla in a filing it made Monday at Oakland state court.
The filing stated that Tesla’s lawyers claimed DFEH did a “barebones investigation” prior to suing and didn’t share worker complaints until the suit was filed. DFEH had also broken a state law, which required the agency to do various things before it could sue an employer.
Last month, the state agency lost a bid against blocking a $18 million settlement between Activision Blizzard Inc and Activision EEOC (NASDAQ:). This was in a sex discrimination matter. According to the agency, Activision’s sex bias suit against it could be affected by the settlement.
DFEH didn’t immediately reply to our request for comment. A spokesperson for the EEOC stated that they do not comment on pending investigations.
In its lawsuit, the state agency accused Tesla of creating a “racially-segregated workplace” in Fremont, California. This was where Black workers were discriminated against when it came to job assignment, discipline, and pay.
Tesla seeks to suspend the lawsuit for 120 calendar days, and forces DFEH (Department of Foreign Affairs) to try to mediate with Tesla’s claims outside the courtroom.
This is Tesla’s latest accusation of discrimination at Fremont.
In a case involving race bias, a federal judge awarded $15 million last week to an ex-Tesla elevator operator. A $137m jury verdict was overturned by the judge. However, the plaintiff provided ample evidence of racial abuses that Tesla had not addressed and the judge awarded $15 million to him.
