REUTERS/Aly SONG/File photoSHANGHAI/HONG KONG, (Reuters) – Electric car manufacturer Tesla (NASDAQ) Inc has resumed production at the Shanghai plant after a three-week hiatus due to the COVID-19 lockdown in the city.
A Tesla Manager told Shanghai Television that the U.S. automaker would increase the production in the coming days so as to resume one shift production at Shanghai’s plant.
Sources close to the situation cautioned that the restart should not be viewed as a return of full production. The line is still under stress due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions.
The source stated that “The resumption was stuttering”.
According to Reuters, Tesla received approval from the local authorities on Friday for preparing for a production resumption Monday at Shanghai’s plant.
According to a second source, the delay in reopening occurred because of logistical problems.
Tesla didn’t immediately respond to our request for comment.
This was the longest stoppage in production since late 2019 when the factory started producing. According to calculations based upon Tesla production plans, the suspension caused a loss in output of over 50,000 vehicles.
Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y models are made in Shanghai to serve the Chinese market. It also acts as an export hub to Germany, Japan and Germany.
