WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Jan. 6th 2021, Trump attempted a coup. This will be a central feature of next month’s congressional hearings, stated Jamie Raskin, Democrat and a member on the Committee who oversaw Trump’s second impeachment.

Trump supporters stormed U.S. Capitol in 2021 to protest the formal congressional approval of Democrat Joe Biden winning the election in November 2020.

Raskin stated that “this was a coup orchestrated by the president against vice president, and against Congress to overturn 2020’s presidential election”, when Raskin was asked about what he had learned from the probe of the committee.

U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson is the chair of the House of Representatives special committee, which was created by Democrats to investigate the events that led up to Jan. 6, assault. He told reporters that he expected public hearings will resume in May.

“We will tell the entire story about everything that occurred. Raskin, who was a member the House special committee said there was an insurrection that turned violent and then a failed coup. “We were saved by Mike Pence refusing to follow this plan.”

The interview was not clear if Raskin was only expressing his opinions or those of other lawmakers who were part of the special committee that included seven Democrats and two Republicans.

A new book published in July 2021 claimed that senior military officers were concerned by a possible coup. However, Trump stated then that he has never threatened to or spoken with anyone regarding a coup.

The House panel organized last year’s initial hearing. Four police officers testified that they were attacked and taunted by racist insults while trying to protect the Capitol against attackers.

Trump had spent months arguing that the election had been stolen by massive voter fraud. This claim was rejected by many courts, Trump’s Justice Department, and recounts approved by fellow Republicans.

“TO SEIZE PRESIDENCY”

Raskin claimed that public hearings will expose the actions of the former president, and those associated with him in an effort to remain at power despite defeat.

Raskin claimed that Trump was ready to take the presidency if the rioters prevented the certification. He would likely also declare martial law.

According to him, the committee has yet to make a decision on whether Trump or Pence will be available for testimony. The vice president oversees the official count of the presidential election votes in Congress every four years.

Pence refused to accept pleas for the November 2020 results to be rescheduled. This would have allowed the House of Representatives in effect to conduct another election with Republicans having an edge that could have elected Trump to a second term.

Four people were among the victims of the Jan. 6 attack. A Capitol Police officer involved in fighting with the rioters was also killed that day. Around 800 individuals have been accused of crimes related to this attack.

Legislators say that the House panel has gathered more than 100,000 documents. Investigators conducted over 800 interviews.

Raskin stated that “we don’t have much experience dealing with coups in the country we live in” and described a coup to be something that occurs against a president.

However, Jan. 6, 2021 was different. He claimed that it did not include the military or any other faction attacking President Obama.

Raskin stated that it was a “self-coup” as political scientists refer to it. He said, “It is a president who fears defeat and overthrowing constitutional processes.”

Trump was twice impeached by the House of Representatives, one after the Capitol attack. Trump was acquitted both times by the U.S. Senate. The former president hinted that he may run for re-election in 2024 at political rallies.
